“Two” is the first and smallest even prime number, signifying divisibility by both one and itself. It is a fundamental concept in mathematics. It´s associated with duality, symmetry and balance, providing an advantage in problem solving, as it allows comparison, choice and contrast. With two alternatives, decisions can be made, dilemmas can be solved and paths can be chosen.

Besides interludes of speedy flattement or percussive ratcheting on many tracks, it’s the penultimate and extended “The Cave Dwellers” which showcases the duo’s multiple and shifting roles. Propelling toneless breaths alongside whistles and tongue slaps Gato’s delicate timbres stop and slide until Parrinha’s input joins with altissimo squeaks prestissimo squeals until moderated trills replace both players’ output. The ending consists of concentrated layers of affiliated pitches.

Two freely improvising alto saxophones create an intriguing dialogue, often enter into antagonistic arguments and rarely create imitative actions.

They rarely use prepared phrases, willingly flow with pure sound streams, but the palette of sound colors and articulation techniques is exceptionally wide. The mother of this narrative is creative jazz, which effectively ignites the improvisational imagination.

João Gato (b. 2000) is one of the most interesting young musicians on the national scene.
The music is purely improvised and based on a process of communication, action and reaction, in constant articulation.
