Trafiklys is an incidental composition/ improvisation duo comprised of two young and active portuguese musicians: Duarte Ventura and João Gato.

Departing from a shared mindset of searching for understanding the tradition and subverting its’ expectations, Trafiklys searches for a style of communication that is both immediate, multi-layered and non-hierarchical. The music, although highly research based and logical, is meant to be accessible to everyone through the usage of these two very specific timbres to create a new sonic universe.

The jazz tradition is also very present in the music they make: «We both start from the admiration we have for the tradition and try to change it to make it relevant to the less structural and ambiguous character of free improvisation.» Compositions are thought of without distinction between composition and improvisation. «What is written must be as spontaneous and lively as what is improvised and improvisation comes from the same universe as written material, whether in a more obvious or more abstract way”

Ventura and Gato show their own creations in this record, displaying a lot of inventiveness and technical precision. “Bebop de Marte” is a calling card with a lot of personality and “1”, which closes the record, is the duo’s most intense track.
